Derecho, Disaster, & Disadvantage
In this Zoom webinar held on September 2nd, the speakers explored how natural disasters such as the recent Derecho in Eastern Iowa disproportionately affect underserved and marginalized communities.
Raymond Siddell, a community organizer, will speak about his experiences mobilizing response efforts in Cedar Rapids. To address the needs of those affected by the Derecho, through grassroots efforts largely using social media, Raymond has facilitated the distribution of resources such as food and necessities, recovery and support services, thousands of dollars in donations, and hundreds of volunteers.
Dr. Eric Tate, Associate Professor, Geographical & Sustainability Sciences Department: Dr. Tate's research specialty is assessing social equity in disaster mitigation and recovery spending and vulnerability and risk related to natural disasters.
